Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Scott was raised an only daughter by her grandmother. Scott completed her studies at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had at two different jobs while studying secondary education. Her goal was to be a high school English teacher. She had a dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, was shattered when she dropped out of high school. As a poet, she began performing in poetry performances live. Then she joined along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create an ensemble. The two ended up writing You Got Me together. At a Roots performance, she declared her artist status. After that, she was able to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She gained more experience on stage as she was a part of the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
